A Quiet Island Community on Lake Biwa

It is a real island community where people live closely with Lake Biwa.
The ferry is part of daily life, fishing boats line the harbor, and the lake is always present in the scenery, work, school life, and local culture of the island.
As you walk through the village, you may see a small elementary school, a local post office, narrow streets, fishing tools, boats, and the quiet everyday scenes of island life.
These simple details are what make Okishima special.
There are no cars or traffic lights on the island, and the pace of life feels slower than in the cities. This allows visitors to relax, breathe, and enjoy a peaceful moment away from crowded tourist areas.
This experience is not about rushing from one famous spot to another. It is about walking respectfully through a living island community and feeling the deep connection between Lake Biwa and the people who live there.
Depending on the day, opening hours, and availability, you may also have the chance to enjoy local lake fish dishes, simple island food, or a small local café. These local food experiences are another special way to feel the connection between Lake Biwa and everyday life on Okishima.

Not Just Sightseeing — Lake Biwa Through a Fishing Guide’s Eyes
This is not a standard sightseeing tour.
As bass fishing guides, Lake Biwa has been our workplace for many years. We spend countless days on the lake, reading the wind, water, fish, seasons, and the subtle changes of nature.
But Lake Biwa is more than just a place to work for us. We deeply respect and love its nature, and we want to share its beauty not only with anglers, but also with travelers who may not fish.
That is why we created this Okishima walking guide.
By taking a local ferry to Okishima and walking through its peaceful village, you can experience the natural beauty of Lake Biwa, the atmosphere of a place where time seems to slow down, and the quiet connection between the lake and the people who live there.
Our hope is that you enjoy the entire experience — the ferry ride, the island walk, the nature, the stillness, and the feeling of discovering a side of Japan that most travelers never see.
