Guide Info

Masao Inoue

Professional bass fishing guide at Lake Ikehara, Japan

Profile

Masao was raised just a short drive from Lake Ikehara and has devoted himself to bass fishing on this lake for decades. While guiding, he has also made a name for himself as a top-level tournament angler — ask anyone who fishes Ikehara, and they will know exactly who he is. His competition record on this lake is almost too long to list.

His specialties are sight fishing and swimbaits. On Ikehara’s ultra-clear water, he blends a strong big-bait game with precise finesse tactics at a level few anglers anywhere can match. We hope every guest goes home not just having enjoyed the fishing, but having learned the style of fishing that only Ikehara — one of Japan’s clearest lakes — can teach.

A Sample Day at Lake Ikehara

Lake Ikehara is about three hours from Osaka, so our standard plan is a two-day, one-night trip: we travel and settle in on the first day, then spend the whole of the second day on the water. Times may shift depending on your pickup point, the season, and the weather.

Day 1 — Travel, hot spring, and rest

1:00 PM
Pickup in the Osaka area or Kansai International Airport

We collect you from your hotel, Osaka Station, Namba, or Kansai International Airport. There is no fishing on the first day, so there is no need for an early start.

4:00 PM
Arrive in Shimokitayama Village

About three hours by car. The last stretch winds deep into the mountains of Nara — the scenery is already part of the trip.

4:30 PM
Check in at your lodge

We will help you reserve a room near the lake, at Anglers Base or The Curve Store (room rates are not included in the tour price), and take you straight there.

5:30 PM
Soak in a local hot spring

Before dinner we can take you to a village onsen, a natural hot spring bath. Ending the day in hot water is part of ordinary life in rural Japan, and it is something most visitors to the country never get to do.

It also loosens you up after the drive and sets you up for the early start tomorrow.

7:00 PM
Dinner and rest

Anglers Base has a restaurant and a tackle shop on site. The Curve Store has a convenience store on the premises, so you can pick up anything you need for the morning.

Day 2 — A full day on the water

5:30 AM
Launch at first light

Dawn is the most productive time at Lake Ikehara. Being on the water at sunrise is the whole reason we build the trip around an overnight stay.

Morning – Afternoon
A full day of fishing

Your guide picks the areas and techniques for the day based on season, water level and weather. You have the entire day to work the lake rather than a few rushed hours.

4:00 PM
Finish fishing

We return to the ramp and pack up.

4:30 PM
Depart the lake

Roughly three hours back toward the city.

7:30 PM
Drop-off in the Osaka area or Kansai International Airport

We drop you at your hotel, station, or the airport.
